What is a SR-22?

SR-22 is a documentation that provides proof of financial responsibility. An SR-22, also called a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR), is a certificate mandated by the state and provided by your auto insurance company that verifies that you have auto insurance liability coverage. The most common reason you might need an SR-22 is if the police pull you over and your driving without auto insurance. If that happens you'll be required to carry the SR-22 for a specified amount of time (usually three years). Once that time is up you will no longer need to carry the SR-22.

  • Reckless Operation of a vehicle
  • Accidents while driving without insurance where your at fault
  • Repeat traffic offenses or getting too many tickets in a short time period
  • License suspension or revoked license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Failure to provide proof of insurance
How do I get an SR-22?

First you will need to get an auto insurance quote from a carrier that will issue and SR-22 Certificate.  Once you get a quote and bind the insurance the certificate can be filed with the state to prove financial responsibility .  You will also get a copy of the certificate that you can provide to the State or BMV to prove that you have liability insurance. In most cases you will need to show this to get your driving privileges back.

Your insurance agent may need to know your case number and will definitely need to know how long you are required to retain an SR-22 so please have the end dates with you when you request a quote.  The case number and end date will be given to you by the court or state.

What happens if I cancel my insurance or let it lapse and I have an SR-22.

The State that the Certificate of Financial Responsibility is filed with will be notified of lapse in auto insurance and your license will be suspended.  You will loose your driving privileges until the auto insurance s back in force.

How much does it cost?

People often ask how much will an SR-22 will cost.  The filing fee is not the cost you should be worried about.  The cost of the auto insurance will be high because of the reason or reasons that you are required to carrier the SR-22. When you need an SR-22 most likely you have done something to give you points on your license. The points will increase the cost of the auto insurance not the SR-22 filing.

Is there a filing fee?

Yes there is a one time filing fee that will be charged per policy period. The filing fee will be $15 to $25 depending on the insurance carrier filing the SR-22.

The Columbus Insurance Market has several carriers that offer SR-22's.  Progressive and Unitrin seem to be the most competitive in auto insurance rates when you need to carry an SR-22.
