Think about getting a motorcycle this spring?
Here are a few things to remember when looking for your motorcycle insurance in Ohio. Remember to have coverage for your Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE).
Make sure you know your bike. You should know what type of motorcycle coverage you have on your bike a well. Most people can get by with a basic motorcycle insurance policy but some cannot. If you have custom upgrades to your bike you need to make sure you have the right insurance coverage.
Some riders need to remember if you have added custom things to your bike like say, custom paint job, custom plating or custom exhaust, trike conversion kits, handlebars, levers, sissy bars, and fenders. If you have upgrades like these you should not have a basic motorcycle insurance policy. Let me give you and example of why not.
Ex. Your bike has a custom paint job, handlebars, levers, sissy bars and fenders that total $5,000. Most insurance companies have a set limit on custom parts and equipment. Let's take progressive for example. They include $1,000 CPE coverage in their motorcycle policy. If you have a claim that exceeds the automatic $1,000 CPE coverage given with Comprehensive or Collision coverage, you need to purchase an additional $4,000 in CPE coverage to ensure the parts are covered if they're damaged in an accident.
It will cost extra to buy the increase coverage in custom part and equipment. However it wil make sure you get your bike back the way you want it in the event of an accident.
We recommended you retain photos of the motorcycle and all receipts for custom parts and equipment. Always keep these in your files to make sure you can prove this in the event of an insurance claim.
