COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE
Comprehensive auto insurance coverage is a portion of an
auto insurance policy that covers damage to the policyholder’s car not involving a collision with another car (including damage from fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, wind, hail, riots, and theft.)
Typically an insurance company will not increase your premium for a single comprehensive claim like they would from a collision claim. All companies have different underwriting guidelines so check with your carrier to find out.
Though comprehensive insurance may be optional, it can be required by your lender if you have a loan. People who have newer cars but might not have a loan may still want to purchase comprehensive coverage to protect their investment.
An example when comprehensive coverage may be used is if your car is damaged by hail, someone keys your car, or maybe you hit a deer. These would all be covered under your comprehensive coverage minus your deductible.
